cleaning the room, if left unsatisfactory by guest

We have a "Non Smoking" room, it is clearly stated on both the advertising and confirmation of booking letter, but we have found the occasional guest will leave the butts and cigarette rubbish in the room bin which stinks the room out. Can we charge extra for cleaning??

As long as it is in your property policy and the guest is advised on checkin, then yes you can.

If you can afford, put smoking alarms. They will stop guests from smoking, but not everyone. As if someone smokes just one cigarette and being far from smoking alarm, it will go unnoticed. So, they play psychological role.

Put in your house rules penalty for smoking. Contact Booking through Message - - - > Description and ask them to put info about penalties.

Print and laminate your House Rules with penalties mentioned. You can even make the guest personally sign the house rules, but again it will not stop everyone from smoking.

The only way to charge them for smoking (guests on Booking) is to be present during guest checkout and conduct inspection trying to smell the air inside and find the evidence such as cigarettes.

Again, the guests can easily say "it's not us", "it was there when we checked in" or simply resist to pay with or without explanations.

On Airbnb you can request money from the guest after he checked out. Press appropriate button. Chance that he will pay is 0%. But you must do that before trying to collect money from Airbnb insurance. Chance that they will pay 50/50. Take pictures of ash, cigarettes and anything visible about smoking. If you have anyone to help you, get written notes from them that they smelled the cigarettes.

Collecting money is a hassle, but preventing is not that difficult. I put no smoking in the house rules. On Airbnb you can put it twice, making sure the message will really reach the guest Before the booking. Before to make a booking, the guest Must acknowledge your house rules. Update your house rules to your likening.

After booking send no smoking in your welcome message. During check in personally warn them that you are very, very strict on smoking. Suggest where they can smoke. Or send them a message-reminder after they check in.

If your city has any related regulations, print them out and inform the guest. My city has No Smoking Ordinance, where smoking in public places is prohibited in whole city (but penalty is very small, $10 for first offence).

When the guest sees rules coming from government, and not from "crazy host", he will behave.
